Cherry Hill Counseling was founded in 1976. We now have several locations in the northwest suburbs including Lake Zurich, Vernon Hills and McHenry. The McHenry, IL office is easily accessible to McHenry County residents, its office being situated very near to the intersection of Bull Valley Rd .and Crystal Lake Rd. In addition to McHenry, the communities of Woodstock, Crystal Lake, Johnsburg, and Spring Grove would have easy access to the Cherry Hill office. The McHenry office is a short drive from local schools, including McHenry West High School and is only 1.5 miles west of Centegra Hospital  and medical complex.

Our treatment team at Cherry Hill – McHenry carries a unique blend of highly experienced clinicians as well as clinicians with specializations and attributes to serve a variety of underserved populations. The Lake Zurich team is composed of a broad spectrum of counseling professionals including: Psychologists, Professional Counselors, and Social Workers. This team of clinicians also provides specialized care for women’s issues including mood disorders that affect women across the reproductive life span. The McHenry team enjoys working with couples and marriages to assist couples with exploring, understanding, and changing relational patterns that cause distress in the relationship and in the home.  Cherry Hill – McHenry has a gerontologist who is passionate about serving the needs of the elderly and their families in McHenry County. It is our hope to provide mental health services to McHenry county residents in these populations that are often overlooked by care providers. Elizabeth Skjoldal, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist

McHenry

Dr. Skjoldal is a psychologist with over 30 yrs of licensed experience. She was born in Cuba and is bilingual. Her primary areas of interest are psychological treatment of chronic illnesses including cancer, trauma, grief and loss. She also has taught at the graduate level in the area of multicultural competency including cultural humility.

Julie Kralik-Welton, Intern Therapist

McHenry

As a 2024 clinical intern, Julie brings experience to her role as a counselor, which includes a background in social work, providing psychoeducation directed toward healthy living, working with families in need, and supporting parents with special needs children. She assists clients with identifying and overcoming barriers to healthy relationships and mental health wellness.

Cathy Araos, MA.Ed., LPC

Cathy's professional path has been diverse, encompassing teaching roles across numerous school districts. A committed lifelong learner, she holds two Master's degrees. Outside of work, she finds joy in woodworking, hiking, and camping adventures with her family.

Jennifer Thelen, MA, LPC

Jennifer works with teens, adults and couples. She is devoted to creating a safe relational environment to encourage self-exploration while supporting clients through life’s challenges.

Jackie Kendall, MA

McHenry

Jackie is acquiring an MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from National Louis University. Jackie is a nature and animal lover who enjoys spending her free time with friends and family. She feels that counseling picked her well before she decided to pursue a career in the helping profession. She was taught at a young age that the greatest gift in the world is helping others.

Kimberly Johnson, MSW, LCSW, CADC

Kimberly has a MSW, LCSW and a CADC along with over 7 years working with serious mental health diagnoses and substance abuse from Schizoaffective Disorder, Bipolar, Anxiety, Depression, substance abuse(s), etc. Additionally, the last 5 years were spent in Hospice on a multi disciplinary team working with terminal illnesses, end of life “issues” and families.

Clark Barshinger, Ph.D.

Lake Zurich | McHenry

Practicing clinical psychology for over 50 years, Dr. Clark Barshinger has broad and deep experience counseling patients. His graduate education includes a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Northwestern University and a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from DePaul University, and Master’s Degree of Divinity from McCormick Theological Seminary. He works mostly with adults, teens and couples.

Keith Bjorge, Psy.D.

Lake Zurich | McHenry

Dr. Keith V. Bjorge is a clinical psychologist with 33+ years of experience. He has experience and passion working with troubled marriages, teen and family related problems, chemical addictions, and mood disorders. Dr. Bjorge earned the Master of Arts and Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology.

Gary Gruebnau, MA, LSW

Gary is a social worker with several decades of experience counseling teens, adults, and couples in secular and church settings. He enjoys working with a broad age range of clients from teens to the elderly. His background includes military service, working in the business world, and teaching in both public and private settings.

Patrick Kelly, MA, LCPC, CCATP

Patrick’s mission as a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor is to utilize his diverse life experience and graduate-level education to make a positive difference in the lives of struggling and hurting people. His passion is working with troubled marriages along with helping individuals cope with and rise above anxiety and depression brought about by life’s challenges and difficulties.

Risa is a Licensed Professional Counselor who has a passion for seeing people come into the fullness of what their life could be. Nicole is a licensed therapist who is passionate about working with children, adolescents, and young adults. She specializes in anxiety, depression, and self-esteem.

Jennifer is passionate about health, wellness, and the body- mind connection. She is finishing her doctorate in Clinical Psychology and is currently interning at Cherry Hill Counseling. Professionally, she has completed ten years of studies and three years of clinical work, and is currently working on her dissertation.

A safe place for identity exploration through group processing, developing self-advocacy skills, and learning how to cope with identity related stressors. For adults approximately 18 years and up.

Date: Wednsdays, 8-9pm, virtually running in 6-week cycles. Can attend continuously.
