Anxiety is one of the most common mental health concerns adults, adolescents, and children are struggling with today.
Several of the therapists on our team have specialized training to help adults, adolescents, and children with anxiety. Anxiety left unchecked can cause significant problems in various areas of your life. Working with a therapist to receive focused treatment for anxiety can significantly improve your quality of life.
What is anxiety?
All people experience some level of anxiety. In many cases anxious feelings serve a practical purpose to warn us of danger and protect us in various situations. If you are in a situation that is potentially dangerous it makes sense to be anxious and your anxiety may even save your life. Anxiety becomes a problem when it starts to impact your day to day life or starts to feel overwhelming for you.
Am I experiencing anxiety?
Possible signs of anxiety can include, but are not limited to:
- Increased heart rate
- Shortness of breath
- Excessive worrying
- Cold hands and feet
- Insomnia (difficulty sleeping)
- Difficulty concentrating
- Becoming easily annoyed or irritable
- Difficulty relaxing/ restlessness
- Fear or dread of something awful happening
Anxiety is unique and looks different for every person. It would be difficult to create an exhaustive list of possible symptoms. You may experience some of the things listed above or your anxiety may look completely different. If you feel that you may be experiencing anxiety then you should consider seeking help.
When should I seek help?
You should consider seeking help for your anxiety when you are troubled or worried about your experience of some of the symptoms above or when your anxiety is negatively impacting one of the following areas of your life:
- Work (difficulty keeping up with your work, interacting with coworkers, or supervisors. Not wanting to go to work)
- School (difficulty completing assignment, tests, focusing in class)
- Relationships (conflict with loved ones, avoidance of interactions or conversations with loved ones)
- Sleep (difficulties falling asleep, staying asleep, or feeling tired when you wake up)
What kind of help is available?
Just as anxiety can look different for each person, the approaches that can help will not be the same for everyone. There are several approaches to therapy that can help with anxiety including, but not limited to CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), and Mindfulness. A therapist trained in anxiety treatment will be able to educate you about different options for treating your anxiety and help you choose an approach that is right for you.
