Support for Depression

If you are struggling with depression, it is important to know that it is possible for you to find support for depression. Depression, which is also sometimes referred to as major depressive disorder or clinical depression, is a common mental disorder that, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, affects an estimated 6.7 percent of all U.S. adults. Being diagnosed with depression, or participating in depression counseling, does not indicate weakness and is not a character flaw. There are many factors that may contribute to depression. Depression may be caused by a combination of genetic, psychological, environmental, social, and biological factors. Major life changes or traumatic events can also cause one to experience the symptoms of depression. In addition, some episodes of depression may occur without any obvious cause at all. Because there are many factors that contribute to depression, most people require the help of a professional in order to feel better. With the right care and support for depression, many individuals can find great relief from their symptoms.

What does support for depression look like?

Support for depression often includes counseling, medication, and even a combination of both counseling and medication. There are also a number of recommendations for “at home” treatments that can be used in coordination with counseling and/or medication. These treatments may include but are not limited to regular exercise, a clean diet, plenty of water, time spent in sunshine and nature, meditation, and quality time with loved ones. It is always advised to work with your doctor and a licensed medical professional in order to find the right treatment plan for you or anyone suffering from depression.

If you and your doctor determine that counseling would be a good form of treatment, then you likely want to find a licensed psychologist with experience in working with depression. There are several approaches that have been shown to help individuals recover from depression. These different approaches can help identify triggers and factors that may contribute to current symptoms and daily challenges, find ways to change, accept, or adapt to those triggers and factors, set realistic goals for feeling better, identify and rewrite outdated thought processes or behaviors that contribute to current symptoms and challenges, and develop additional problem solving skills.

Our techniques

At Cherry Hill Counseling, we use specific techniques in our counseling services that can be used to help you or a loved one find relief. These techniques include identifying and modifying maladaptive beliefs, cognitive reframing, learning emotional regulation skills, assessing value and life goals, learning conflict resolution and problem solving skills, role-playing, and more. Our individual depression counseling sessions are designed to help you find relief from your symptoms and remind you that you do not have to walk through life alone.

As you find and begin support for depression, you will learn that sadness, loneliness, and uncertainty are common feelings and can be common reactions to difficult times in life. Depression counseling becomes increasingly more important as you or a loved one continues to experience the symptoms of depression for weeks and months at a time, or if the symptoms you or a loved one are experiencing interfere with the ability to handle daily life. Many people need treatment under the care of a professional to feel better and find relief from their depression symptoms.
