Personal Statement

Every person has a story that needs to be heard, yet too often these stories are never told because of the shame, fear, or grief the person feels. That is why I strive to create trust and safety with each of my clients as they take the risk to pursue healing and growth in their lives. I consider the stories clients share with me to be a precious gift that I must steward well. Together, we will work to loosen the hold that shame and fear have had in their lives and prepare them to walk in greater freedom.

Who I Serve

I work with adolescents, adults, couples, and families. I have a heart for helping people come out of relational hiding patterns to experience greater safety and trust. Relationships touch every aspect of our lives and are powerful to either destroy or restore. This is particularly evident in families and marriages. I consider it a privilege to walk with them to develop stronger relational bonds in which each member can feel understood, cared for, and appreciated.

Too often, when someone’s relationships are suffering, there is unresolved trauma or other painful memories influencing their ability to feel connected and/or safe with others in the present. Until the past is also resolved, the person will continue to be triggered in their current relationships and spend a lot of energy trying to manage their own reactions. Trauma is often misdiagnosed and thus left untreated. The more that I witnessed this and learned about trauma, the greater desire I had to provide the necessary care for individuals with trauma histories to begin thriving again.

I also love to work with those who are navigating multiple cultures and struggling to handle all of the transitions and losses involved. I seek to build on the individual’s strengths that he or she brings to assist them in moving forward.

Theoretical Approach

My priority with clients is to develop a secure client-counselor alliance. Early on in the process, I attend to clients’ motivation level and values to help clients clarify their goals for therapy and increase readiness for change. Because of the uniqueness of each person and their experiences, I seek to tailor my approach with evidence-based treatment to fit their needs. I draw heavily from attachment theory which attends to our innate need for connection. I primarily draw on Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, Internal Family System Therapy and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) for trauma. I am also happy to explore clients’ struggles with them from a faith perspective when desired.
